Living in Truth: Václav Havel’s The Power of the Powerless in Post-Truth Times What if the defining problem of a “post-truth” world is not that people believe lies but that truth increasingly ceases to matter for how they act? Join Prof. Marci Shore In reading Václav Havel’s The Power of the Powerless and reconsidering the essay’s striking way of reframing our contemporary predicament. Havel’s famous greengrocer performs ideological conformity without necessarily believing the slogans he displays. Havel thus directs our attention beyond misinformation toward the practices and institutions that make truthfulness consequential. This seminar asks what Havel can teach us about contemporary politics, journalism, and academic life—and whether “living in truth” requires not merely better information, but social practices capable of sustaining genuine truth-seeking.
